1990s Throwback Jerseys

Every season of the 1990s, 1990 to 1999. Pick a year and see what turned up on eBay: championship throwbacks, rookie replicas, deep cuts you forgot existed. Shopping for someone born in the 1990s? Their birth year pins the gift to one season, and that season's champions are right on its page. How to pick the right one.

What did 1990s jerseys look like?

The decade the jerseys got big. Fits ran deliberately oversized, shorts dropped past the knee, and the color palette went teal and purple almost everywhere at once: the Hornets had opened the door in 1988, then the Marlins and Rockies arrived in 1993, the Mighty Ducks in eggplant and jade the same year, and the Grizzlies and Raptors in 1995.

Champion made the NBA's on-court jerseys from 1990 through 1997, which makes a Champion tag the single most useful dating mark on a 1990s basketball shirt. The NFL put every team in throwbacks for its 75th season in 1994, so a 1994 NFL jersey may legitimately look forty years older than it is. The NHL introduced third jerseys in 1995-96. One warning specific to this decade: because everything about it is desirable, it is also the most reproduced era in the sport, and a jersey that merely looks 90s is more likely to be a modern reissue than one from any other decade.

Who made 1990s jerseys?

The maker on the tag is the first thing to check against a claimed year. It rules a fake out, never in, because a counterfeit copies the tag too.
