What did 1940s jerseys look like?
Wool flannel, cut loose, and heavy enough that players sweated through it by the third inning. Baseball jerseys buttoned up the front with a sleeved undershirt beneath, football jerseys were durene over leather-era padding, and basketball was still satin and wool in a league that barely existed yet.
Names on the back were not a thing. A jersey from this decade carries a number and a team, and dating one means reading the wordmark and the franchise itself: the NHL had frozen into the Original Six in 1942, and pro basketball only started as the BAA in 1946, taking the NBA name in 1949. Worth knowing before you shop: the fan replica did not exist as a product category yet, so anything surviving from these years is either team-issued or a modern reproduction of one, with very little in between.
